NLM Catalog

Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr

The NLM Catalog provides an approach to NLM bibliographic data for over 1.4 million journals, books, audiovisuals, computer software, electronic resources, and other materials. Updated every weekday, the NLM Catalog is an alternative search interface to the bibliographic records in LocatorPlus.

The NLM Catalog contains detailed MEDLINE indexing information for the journals in PubMed and other NCBI databases. The Journals Database has been retired.

LocatorPlus is the web-based public access catalog part of the Voyager system used at NLM. It contains information on NLM’s holdings, circulation status, and access to the records in MARC format.

The NLM Catalog is serving the needs of the majority of users.

Enhancements to the Limits page

A new category of Limits will be added called Journal Subsets. Users can also limit searches to journals published in electronic-only format.

New Journal format display option and expanded Full display
A Journal display will be added to the Display Options in the NLM Catalog. This display includes fields of interest to those searching for information about journals, including MEDLINE indexing information. The Full display will also be expanded to include all available fields where applicable.

Additional filters

The following new filters have been created;

  • Journals in the NCBI databases
  • Journals Currently Indexed in MEDLINE
  • PubMed Only Journals

Users can view all available filters by browsing the index on the Advanced Search page.

Searching for Journals

The NLM Catalog will contain detailed MEDLINE indexing information about the journals in PubMed and other NCBI databases. Users can limit NLM Catalog searches to journals in the NCBI databases by using the Journals in NCBI Databases link on the NLM Catalog homepage or the Limits page.

To search Journals in NCBI NLM Catalog, we have to click on Journals in NCBI Databases on the home page of the NLM Catalog. Then enter a topic, journal title or abbreviation, or ISSN into the search box. On the summary display of search results, click the journal title for a specific journal, or Full display from the Display Settings menu to view additional information. The Full display shows all available fields, including those of interest when searching for information about the journals in the NLM Catalog.
